489-518: Fuel Assembly and 3-D Reactor Core Design and Modeling

Instructor: Jean Ragusa

This course will study the application of state-of-the-art, engineering-grade codes to the neutronic design, analysis, and modeling of nuclear fuel assembly and core. The course is based on the traditional methodology used in reactor physics, which consists in a divide & conquer approach where fuel assembly characteristics are obtained using two-dimensional transport codes; then, few-group (typically 2-group) diffusion is utilized to model the three-dimensional nuclear core. A brief introduction to the physics and mathematics of these code systems will be given. The students will then be instructed in the use of 1. a 2D neutron transport lattice physics code for assembly design and analysis, 2. a 3D neutron diffusion code for power distribution and reload analysis
