689-523: Nuclear Materials under Extreme Conditions

Instructor: Lin Shao

This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of materials behaviors under extreme conditions. The extreme conditions include radiation, stress, corrosion, and high temperature environments in reactors. Materials covered include fuel, cladding, moderator, reflector, coolant, control, shielding, piping and safety systems. Materials degradation phenomena include defect clustering, void formation, swelling, fission gas release, radiation hardening, fracture, creep, alloy decay and phase segregation. The course will also equip students with the basic knowledge for modeling and characterization of degraded materials.

689-521: Fast Spectrum Systems and Applications

Instructor: Pavel Tsvetkov

design and analysis of nuclear systems and nuclear fuel cycles; data, methods and tools for advanced nuclear system modeling; systems analysis; sustainable development of nuclear energy and fast spectrum systems; partitioning & transmutation science and engineering in radioactive waste management; hybrid systems; Advanced Fuel Cycle program; design aspects of Advanced Fast Reactors – neutronics and heat removal, safety, materials, and systems.

Prerequisites: Graduate enrollment or approval by instructor
