The Department of Nuclear Engineering Presents:
Invited Speakers Series
"Nuclear Technology and Society"

Nuclear . . . Few words stir such visceral response in so many: spirited debate between policymakers; opportunities for discovery by researchers; energy source leading to energy "independence" in many nations; apprehension among the general public;. The nuclear era began with the development and deployment of nuclear technology as an instrument of war. The Nuclear Age brought a quick end to World War II and nations moved to harness this energy source through a number of civilian applications, most notably the generation of electricity. However, the legacy of this technology also involves an eternal imperative to consciously ensure that nuclear energy is employed to support the development of civilization, rather than to extinguish it.
Lecture Series
The nuclear enterprise will forever embody a strong societal dimension as mankind struggles to better communicate and understand the nature of this source of energy--its risks and benefits-- while continually developing and adapting it to guarantee safety, security, and sustainability in the globalized environment of the 21st Century.

The Nuclear Engineering Department at Texas A&M University celebrates the challenge of exploring the rich interface between nuclear technology and society by sponsoring a lecture series by experts representing the broad spectrum of nuclear technology in today's world, and the special policy and sociological issues that are engendered by its application.
Opportunities
Nuclear technology impacts nearly every discipline at Texas A&M University: policy issues at the George Bush School of Government and Public Service; economic issues with the Mays School of Business; nuclear medicine and diagnostics with the Medical School; societal impact with Liberal Arts; enhancing application with the College of Science are just a few areas for broader and deeper exploration of the nuclear discussion.
